The
UC Davis Debate Team participates in the National Parliamentary
Debate Association, a competitive forensics organization
that includes universities and colleges from across the
nation. UC Davis
stands out as a highly successful, student-run team.
The Debate Team strives to teach students the skills of
persuasive speaking and logical argumentation. Topics
of debate include politics, current events at the national
and international levels, philosophy, and ethics.
Team members must be well versed in current news and issues
of global concern. Benefits of debating include increased
confidence for public speaking, better note taking abilities,
and improved critical thinking. Debating also offers
the chance to travel to different schools and meet many
interesting and intelligent people. An optional one
unit course is available per quarter of upper division English
credit for members who consistently participate.
We travel to approximately 10 tournaments throughout the
fall and winter quarters, culminating with the national
tournament in March. Tournaments typically begin on
Friday and last through Sunday.
